Coronavirus in Miami

Hello and welcome to this blog page from Jack Fawsitt Productions. I have created this blog page to document and discuss about the rapidly advancing pandemic that is sweeping the world, known as 'COVID-19', or more colloquially known as the 'Coronavirus'. More specifically, this page will mostly cover the pandemic as it occurs in Miami. The page will run in chronological order, starting earliest first, and then continuing until the present:

- Events before 14 March 2020 -

  • South Florida has seen a huge surge in cases within just the last few days, with the City of Miami's Mayor: Francis Suarez, testing positive for COVID-19
  • Scores of events have been cancelled, including the Ultra Music Festival, Calle Ocho, the County Fair, and the Miami Beach Pride Festival, amongst others
  • All Miami-Dade Public Schools are ordered to close until at least 30 March, as well as the majority of privately run schools and universities, which are switching to online tutoring
  • Panic buying has swept the county, with multiple supermarkets running out of stock across most or all of their inventory
- 14 March 2020 -
  • Miami Beach announces new restrictions to slow the spread of COVID-19, including a ban of large gatherings, the re-opening of Ocean Drive to traffic, and the closure of South Beach for a thorough deep-cleaning
  • The Frost Museum of Science is temporarily closing for an unspecified amount of time
  • In other news, US President Donald Trump has announced that the UK and Ireland will be included in the Europe-wide travel ban effective Monday 16 March, due to COVID-19 concerns

-15 March 2020-
  • 39 new Coronavirus cases were announced in Florida, including 5 new cases in Miami-Dade County. This brings the total number of cases in the State to 107 Florida residents
  • Miami-Dade Public Schools will start providing meals to all students starting Monday
  • Miami Beach introduces a 23:00 curfew for the city’s entertainment district, and all non-essential businesses in the city will close at 22:00
  • Cases jump to 136 Florida residents in less than 24 hours
  • All restaurants, clubs and bars in Miami-Dade County must close by 23:00, with capacity in all of the above (plus cinemas) to be cut in half, per orders from Miami-Dade County Mayor: Carlos Gimenez. The order will come into effect tomorrow.

-16 March 2020-
  • The Miami Beach curfew begins tonight, and will occur every night from 23:00-05:00 until further notice
  • Key Biscayne also has a curfew from 22:00-05:00

-17 March 2020-
  • Francis Suarez signs order closing all bars, eat-in restaurants, gyms, nightclubs, cinemas, bowling alleys and music venues in the City of Miami because of the Coronavirus
  • Across the state of Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis has closed all bars and sit-down restaurants in Florida after 17:00 today. This closure will last for 30 days
  • All Miami-Dade schools will be closed until at least 15 April

-18 March 2020-
  • Miami-Dade County has an executive order restricting or closing non-essential services and activities, goes into effect 19 March

-19 March 2020-
  • Miami-Dade County closes all parks and beaches at 09:00, and all non-essential services must close by 21:00. This essentially puts the County on a de-facto lockdown

-20 March 2020-
  • New jobs are available at Walmart and Publix, due to increased demand at supermarkets in Miami because of the Coronavirus

-21 March 2020-
  • An executive order has been signed by Miami-Dade County, which forces all hotels and motels within the county to close
  • Fares for Miami-Dade Transit will be temporarily suspended as of tomorrow

-22 March 2020-
  • All boat ramps and marinas are now closed in Miami-Dade County

-23 March 2020-
  • All accommodation must close by tonight in Miami-Dade County
  • Miami Beach issues a stay-at-home order, effective tonight
  • Key Biscayne bans all non-resident travel

-24 March 2020-
  • Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez orders all public spaces to limit their capacity to 10 people
  • The City of Miami issues a stay-at-home order from today, effectively placing the city on lockdown. At this time there is no county-wide lockdown.

-25 March 2020-
  • Police will begin to enforce the social distancing measures in Miami-Dade County
  • Miami-Dade County Mayor: Carlos Gimenez, urges residents to stay at home, essentially meaning a stay-at-home order is in effect in all but name
-26 March 2020-
  • Brightline services are suspended indefinitely
  • The City of Miami will be under a daily curfew between 22:00 and 05:00, beginning tomorrow night
  • Homestead is also under a curfew starting tomorrow night, from 22:00 to 05:00
  • Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez, issues an order for all residents to stay-at-home (lockdown)

-27 March 2020-
  • Miami-Dade Mayor signs an order, that forces all remaining open businesses to practice social distancing

-28 March 2020-
  • A text message about social distancing is sent to everyone in Miami (and Florida for that matter)

-29 March 2020-
  • Federal social distancing guidelines have been extended until at least 30 April (realistically this will likely last until a COVID-19 vaccine is developed)

-30 March 2020-
  • Miami-Dade County forces all pools and gyms in condominiums to close
  • Social Distancing will be enforced until at least 15 April, though an earlier comment that this would last until 15 May, has apparently been debunked

-31 March 2020-
  • All adult day care centres must close by Friday in all areas of Miami-Dade County

-1 April 2020-
  • All flights from Miami to Cuba are suspended as of today due to the Coronavirus
  • Social distancing extended until 30 April statewide

-2 April 2020-
  • Miami testing sites are now open to people aged 18+ with symptoms

-3 April 2020-
  • All adult day care centres will be closing today
  • Miami Beach issues an order requiring all employees and customers of essential businesses to cover their mouth and nose with a mask or equivalent, beginning 7 April

-4 April 2020-
  • A virtual conference was held by the Miami-Dade County Mayor

-5 April 2020-
  • Since today was Palm Sunday, many religious services were held online via social media

-6 April 2020-
  • Almost 4,000 cases of Coronavirus in Miami-Dade County

-7 April 2020-
  • Effective today, masks must be worn whilst in Miami Beach businesses

-8 April 2020-
  • Miami Beach Convention Center will become a temporary hospital with 450 beds

-9 April 2020-
  • The City of Miami will now force all employees and customers in businesses to wear masks or face coverings.

-10 April 2020-
  • Facial masks must be worn in all public locations where social distancing cannot be maintained within Miami-Dade County

-11 April 2020-
  • Cases are around 6,000 in Miami-Dade County

-12 April 2020-
  • Cases top 7,000 in Miami-Dade County
